The joints most commonly affected are weight-bearing ones — the lower back, hips, knees, and feet — along with the hands, which endure constant use through daily activities. Osteoarthritis tends to appear more frequently in women than men and becomes markedly more common after age 45, though it is not exclusively an older adult’s disease.

In many cases, a detailed symptom history combined with a physical examination is sufficient. When ordered, X-rays are primarily used to assess the extent of existing joint damage rather than to confirm the diagnosis itself. Treatment Focuses on Managing Symptoms, Not Reversing Damage
There is currently no medication capable of slowing or reversing the cartilage damage caused by osteoarthritis, which means treatment is fundamentally supportive — aimed at controlling symptoms and preserving function rather than curing the underlying condition.
Lifestyle modification is often the most impactful intervention, particularly for osteoarthritis affecting weight-bearing joints. Reducing excess body weight through physical activity and healthier eating directly reduces the mechanical load placed on affected joints, easing pain and potentially slowing further deterioration.
For pain relief, treatment typically follows a stepwise approach:
- First-line: Over-the-counter acetaminophen, generally considered safe at doses up to 4,000 milligrams per day
- Second-line: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which can meaningfully reduce joint pain and stiffness but carry risks including stomach irritation, kidney strain, and elevated blood pressure with regular use
- Injections: Corticosteroid injections directly into the affected joint, which can offer temporary relief for some patients
- Physical therapy: Strengthening the muscles surrounding an affected joint, which is strongly recommended to improve stability and reduce strain
