Eight Years, 60 Crore Lives: India’s Health Safety Net Goes Digital
Arogya Manthan 2026 opens on 25 September at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, marking eight years of Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) and five years of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). Union Health Minister Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda will inaugurate the event, organised by the National Health Authority (NHA).
The occasion is part celebration, part stocktaking. Its focus is clear: making health assurance faster, fairer and more data-driven.
Why Arogya Manthan 2026 Matters
Launched in 2018, AB PM-JAY offers health cover of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary hospitalisation. It now covers more than 60 crore beneficiaries and has facilitated over 13 crore hospital admissions, with treatment worth more than ₹2 lakh crore.
In October 2024, the scheme was extended to all citizens aged 70 and above, regardless of income. That expansion brought around 6 crore additional senior citizens under the scheme. [INTERNAL LINK: your article on health coverage for senior citizens in India]
ABDM, launched in September 2021, builds the digital backbone behind this protection. As of 1 September 2026, India has created over 97.8 crore Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHAs) and linked more than 121 crore health records. More than 5.6 lakh health facilities and 11 lakh healthcare professionals are registered on the platform.
Key Launches at Arogya Manthan 2026
The event will launch five initiatives:
- National Healthcare Providers Registry (NHPR) mobile app
- NHCX Implementation Guide for Payers
- Guidebook for a Model Digital Health Facility
- Secure Data Environment (SDE) application
- Framework for Auto-Adjudication of Claims under AB PM-JAY
Auto-adjudication uses technology to process routine claims with less manual review. For hospitals, this can mean faster payments. For patients, it can mean fewer delays at discharge.
The Secure Data Environment: Research With Guardrails
The Secure Data Environment is the most significant launch at Arogya Manthan 2026. Developed by the NHA with support from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, it offers governed access to AB PM-JAY and ABDM data.
Approved entities can work only with de-identified data, or run their code inside an isolated NHA environment. All outputs are reviewed before release. The aim is to support health research, programme planning, outcome analysis and responsible AI innovation, while protecting personal data. [INTERNAL LINK: your article on AI in Indian healthcare]
The trust test will be in the execution. Strong governance, transparency about who accesses the data, and alignment with India’s data protection law will decide whether citizens feel safe.
Sessions Shaping the Next Phase
Deliberations will cover the National Health Claims Exchange (NHCX) for streamlining insurance. Parallel sessions will address intelligent claims processing, strategic purchasing for quality and cost-effectiveness, the Unified Health Interface (UHI), and common health-data standards. Best-performing States and Union Territories will also be recognised.
The event brings together government officials, hospitals, insurers, technology experts, academia and development partners. Their task at Arogya Manthan 2026 is to review what has worked and set priorities for the next phase. Other ABDM tools already in use include the Strategy for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare for India (SAHI), the Bharat Health Terminology Service and Common Lab Codes for India, all aimed at a standardised, interoperable system.
What Arogya Manthan 2026 Means for You
For everyday users, three steps help you benefit:
- Create your ABHA to store and share health records with your consent.
- Check your eligibility for AB PM-JAY, especially if a family member is 70 or older.
- Use Scan & Register at participating hospitals to skip long registration queues.
Arogya Manthan 2026 shows how far India’s health assurance has come in eight years. The next chapter will depend on turning records into better care, and data into trust.
