World Measles Immunization Day highlights the critical importance of vaccination in preventing measles, one of the most contagious viral diseases affecting children worldwide. Despite the availability of a safe and effective vaccine for more than five decades, measles continues to pose a significant public health challenge, particularly in regions with low immunization coverage.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), measles caused an estimated 95,000 deaths globally in 2024, with most deaths occurring among children under five years of age who were unvaccinated or under-vaccinated. Globally, measles still infects millions each year, with around 11 million cases reported in 2024. Encouragingly, vaccination programs have dramatically reduced the disease burden. WHO estimates that measles vaccination prevented nearly 59 million deaths worldwide between 2000 and 2024, making it one of the most successful public health interventions in history.
However, immunity gaps remain a concern. In recent years, disruptions in routine immunization services and vaccine hesitancy have led to declining vaccination coverage in some regions. To prevent outbreaks, at least 95% population coverage with two doses of the measles-containing vaccine is required to achieve community (herd) immunity. The measles vaccine, often given as part of the Measles-Rubella (MR) or MMR vaccine, provides strong protection and is included in national immunization programs across many countries, including India. Ensuring timely vaccination, strengthening surveillance systems, and improving public awareness are essential steps toward measles elimination.On this World Measles Immunization Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to protecting every child through vaccination. Achieving and maintaining high immunization coverage is key to preventing outbreaks and moving closer to a world free from measles.
